New Stories 2-2000

The company for the 1st year seemed honest , but then business seemed to go down and my boss seemed to get more greedy. his honesty and our friendship also seemed to dissipate. Anyways, fast forwarding he always seemed uncomfortable with my sexuality and also in anger would threaten me phisically and mentally. the whole company seemed to turn on me so i asked for my 1000$ cash award and a bus ticket. he said no called me a weak ass and told me i was fired... after i had already quit! I got back to the hotel with my carhandler, and was forced to "pack my shit". My Boss's ex wife, who regularly sexually harasses the guys, began to yell at me so i plopped my "shit" on the sidewalk in front of the hotel and waited for the other vans to get in to see the bosses top agent, and three time contest winner on the sidewalk like a "wab". I accomplished my goal. the whole company saw me and the negative seed was planted. I asked for my $13 bus ticket, waited for my friend (whom I "folded") and we left. The 2 year rip off nightmare was over. I asked for my cash award and was "fired". My advice... "wab while you can and do your best to fold everyone else... dont make these assholes anymore money. my high day is 31 for 826 in production (thats about 2000$ worth of magazines in one day) and they trated me like a new kid.

Do you regret: yes. i was really scammed. I made him richer and richer, and got 15$ draws and got jipped on my cash award.

I WAS 19 YRS OLD WHEN I JOINED THE MAG CREW. I HAD JUST BEEN THROUGH A REALLY AWFUL THING, AND NEEDED SOMETHING IN MY LIFE TO GET ME TO BE NORMAL AGAIN.SO WHEN I SAW THE AD, I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE PERFECT. SO I WENT TO THE HOTEL, AND THE HEAD LADY WAS THERE. BOY WHEN SHE SAW ME, SHE WAS TRYING SO HARD TO HIRE ME. SHE GAVE ME 200.00 AND SAID I COULD JUST MAKE SO MUCH MORE, WITH MY LOOKS, I WOULD BE THERE TOP GAL. WELL THATS ALL I NEEDED TO HEAR. I WAS HOOKED.MY FAMILY WAS NOT HAPPY AT ALL,ESPECIALLY MY MOM, SHE ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTCK WHEN I TOLD HER I WAS LEAVING, BUT SHE MET THEM, MY DAD DID TOO, AND THEY WERE OK WITH IT.. THESE OWNERS COULD CONVINCE ANYONE OF ANYTHING...AND MY FOLKS ARE VERY SMART, AND THEY WERE EVEN WON OVER. MY FIRST DAY CONSISTED OF GOING TO A MALL, AND WALKING UP TO DORKY LOOKING GUYS ( GUYS ONLY) AND TELLING THEM I WAS GOING TO THE LOCAL UNIVERSITY. TO EARN MONEY FOR SCHOOL I WAS SELLING THESE MAGS, AND THEY WERE USUALLY ALL FOR HELPING OUT A COLLEGE STUDENT. I WAS RAISED NOT TO LIE, AND TO ALWAYS BE TRUTHFULL WITH EVERYONE, BUT THIS SEEMED TO BE THE ONLY WAY I COULD MAKE MONEY.SO, I LIED, AND LIED. I MET EVERYONE, AND BEING THE "NEW GIRL" ALL THE GUYS WANTED TO BE WITH ME, TO HAVE A G-FRIEND ON THE ROAD. I WASNT INTERESTED....AT FIRST. I HAVE TO SAY, THE PEOPLE I WORKED FOR DID MAKE ALOT OF MONEY. THEY DROVE MERCEDES, BMW, PORCHA, HAD BRAND NEW VEHICKLES FOR THE CREW, BUT THEY WERE THE MOST MANIPULATIVE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD. THERE WOULD BE GIRLS GETTING PREGNANT LEFT AND RIGHT, AND THEY WOULD TELL THEM THAT THEY HAD SUCH A FUTURE WITH THE MAG BZNESS, AND IF THEY HAD THIS BABY THEY WOULDNT BE ABLE TO STAY, SO THEY HAD TWO CHOICES: HAVE THE BABY AND GET SENT HOME/ OR GET AN ABORTION (WHICH THE BOSS WOULD FRONT THEM THE MONEY FOR). THESE YOUNG GIRLS THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE NOTHING IF THEY WERENT IN THAT BUISINESS, SO ID SAY 98% OF THEM WOULD TERMINATE THER PREGNANCIES.. IT MADE ME SOOOOO SAD FOR THEM. BACK TO WHAT I WAS SAYING BEFORE, I MET WHAT WOULD END UP BEING MY FUTURE HUSBAND 2 MONTHS AFTER I STARTED. HIS NAME IS MARK, AND HE WAS SOOO LOVING, AND BOUGHT ME ALL THIS JEWERLY,CLOTHES, AND ANYTHING ELSE I WANTED. HE WAS A CAR HANDLER, AND MADE ALOT OF MONEY. I WAS ARRESTED IN MAY95, AND WAS BAILED OUT, BUT I HAD DECIDED IT WASNT FOR ME ANYMORE, SO I TOLD MARK, IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME YOU WILL COME WITH ME. SO, WE GOT OFF THE ROAD. IT LASTED 1 YEAR, AND WHEN THE CREW CAME THROUGH MY HOME STATE OF INDIANA,WE WENT BACK, MUCH TO MY DISMAY. WE WERE MARRIED WHEN WE OFF THE ROAD, AND WERE DOING WELL, BUT THEY HAVE THIS WAY TO SUCK YOU BACK IN, SO THATS WHAT HAPPENED.

I WAS PROMOTED WHEN WE CAME BACK, TO AN ADD RUNNER, I GOT TO HIRE ALL THE PEOPLE, AND LIE TO THEM, AND THER FAMILIES TELLING THEM HOW GREAT THIS WAS, AND WHAT AN EXCELENT OPPORTUNITY IT WOULD BE FOR THEM, AND THERE CHILD.......WHAT A CROCK.. I HATED DOING THAT, BUT I MADE 300.00 A WEEK SITTING AROUND WATCHING MY SOAPS,TALK SHOW, AND ALL I HAD TO DO WAS ANSWER THE PHONE AND TRY TO HIRE PEOPLE. MY HUSBAND STARTED BEATING ME BEFORE WE EVEN LEFT THE CREW, BUT I THOUGHT IT WOULD PASS, AND WHEN WE GOT MARRIED I THOUGHT IT WOULD STOP.I WAS WRONG. WHEN WE WENT BACK ON THE ROAD, IT GOT WORSE, BECAUSE HE HAD SO MUCH PRESSURE ON HIM, AND HE WAS GETTING READY TO GO OUT AS A MANAGER.HE WOULD HIT ME RIGHT IN FRONT OF OTHER AGENTS, MANAGERS, AND EVEN DO THINGS IN FRONT OF THE OWNERS, AND NO ONE WOULD HELP ME. I TOO, FELT IF I LEFT I WOULD END UP FLIPPING BURGERS AT MACDONALDS,LIKE THEY ALWAYS TOLD EVERYONE WHO WANTED TO LEAVE, I DIDNT WANT THAT.HE WAS SO ABUSIVE, MENTALLY TOO. WHEN WE FINALLY DID GET OUR OWN CREW, HE WOULD CALL ME EVERY NAME HE COULD THINK OF IN FRONT OF OUR EMPLOYEES, AGENTS THAT I WOULD BE CHECKING IN, GIVING THEM THER NIGHTLY DRAW, AND DEMANDING RESPECT FROM, BECAUSE I TOO WAS THERE BOSS., BUT THEN HERES MARK DISRESPECTING ME IN FRONT OF THEM, OH IT WAS A BIG MESS. I WILL SAY THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR, DID PAY THERE PEOPLE AT MINIMUM-15.00 EVERY NIGHT, NO MATTER WHAT, NO MATTER HOW MANY MAGS THEY SOLD. THERE WOULD BE TIMES SOME OF THE GUYS WERE HIT, PUSHED, AND EVEN BEATEN UP, BUT THAT WAS MOSTLY DONE BY THE CAR HANDLERS, AND THE OWNERS DIDNT KNOW, CUZ THE AGENTS WERE SCARED TO GET FIRED, OR BEATEN UP WORSE, IF THEY TOLD. WE DID MAKE MAKE REALLY LONG JUMPS FROM STATE TO STATE. TOO LONG I THINK, AND THEY WOULD ALWAYS LEAVE ON A SUNDAY UNLESS IT WAS REALLY FAR, THEN THEY WOULD LEAVE ON A SATURDAY.I WAS WITH THAT CREW FOR ALMOST 4 YEARS, I AM NOW OFF THE ROAD, BEEN OFF FOR 6 MONTHS, LEFT MY ABUSIVHUSBAND, AND THE ABUSE I ENDURED FROM THAT COMPANY, AND HAVE THE MOST WONDERFUL MAN IN MY LIKE WHO TREATS ME LIKE A QUEEN, AND I DONT HAVE TO HAVE MY QUOTA FOR HIM TO THINK IM A WONDERFUL PERSON.

TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN THESE TYPES OF BUISENESS, DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THEM, FIND OUT IF THERE REGISTERED WITH THE BBB, IF THEYVE HAD ANY WRONGFUL DEATHS, OR ANY KIND OF DEATHS ON THERE CREW, AND REALLY THINK HARD BEFORE YOU SAY YES TO ANYONE ON A CREW, CUZ ONCE YOU DO YOUR LIFE BECOMES THERES.

THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH FOR SETTING UP THIS SITE, PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW WHATS GOING ON OUT THERE, AND IM GLAD TO KNOW MAYBE MY STORY WILL SWAY SOMEONES MIND TO JUST SAY NO TO THESE PEOPLE:::::::YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY NO THANKS TO A JOB OFFER.

There was a newspaper article in my college town that was headlined with Sun & Fun. Being a curious Freshman I called it not knowing whatit would be. I talked to a lady and she briefly explained that I could see all of the United States's biggest cities if I joined her crew. I was so excited I started to tell all of my friends. One of them was also interested. Later that night I got a knock on my door from a 19 year old guy selling magazines. How convienent huh! I'm not really sure how he got my address or maybe he was just going door to door or maybe I just looked like a person who was stupid enough to by something. Anyway I talked to him for a long time about his job, and he made me want to participate even more. He said that after 35,000 points you could be in for a drawing for a trip to Paris. My friend and I were so excited. We asked him how much money he made in the last 6 months since he started and he said $17,000.00. We were dumb enough to believe him. He told us that he didn't really know because he didn't keep track of his savings account the company did. He also told us about how when he would sell like 12 magazines his boss would buy him new shoes or a new coat. Another prize for the most sold was a pack of cigarettes. He told me that they were given $20.00 a day for food, that kind of seemed weird because in bigger cities you couldn't even get 2 meals off of that. He told us that they would stay in nice hotels and usually worked around the College Campuses. They supposable partied all night and then worked whenever they found time. But while I was trying to get more information out of him he seemed like he was in hury to go, almost like he would get into trouble for staying any longer. He eventually left but I was dumb enough to buy a magazine. I only bought it because I thought that I might eventually work with the guy and I was just trying to be nice. That night I called my mom thinking that she might think that it would be a good idea to travel around the U.S. Yeah right. Her reaction was not that at all. She got mad and hung up on me. Ten minutes later my older sister called me and read me your web page. I got really freaked out. I totally changed my mind. that night I called and cancelled my magazine and left a message on the ladies machine that I was no longer interested and that I wanted them to leave me alone and stop false advertising to college students. One of my friends called her before she could talk to me and the lady asked her if she was really interested or if she was just trying to piss her off like I was. She had a caller id and saw that the numbers were similar. I was the one pissed then she had no right revealing my name to someone she didn't even know I was friends with. The lady then called and asked why I changed my mind. I told her that my family cared to much about me to let me ruin my life selling magazines and possibily getting raped. Thanks for your help on talking me out of this so called awesome job. Please e-mail me back some more stories from your experience. Also I just thought I would let you know that I called my campus security of the crew that came to my door. I asked the lady how she could let them come into no Solicitation dorms and she said that they have a policy with the Better Business Buerau and they are allowed to do this. Not true they got kicked off the campus.

Number one! here is my story...When I was hired, I was into the gang scene. Believing that was the way to live. I found out quickly that it was not the way to live. The magazine business and the crew I was on showed me a new direction of self worth and believing that I could have a successfull future. Its a tragedy that accidents happen, but the person in the Wiconsin incident is in jail right now, he was not forced to make the decision to remove himself from the control of the moving vehicle, that was his choice, plain and simple. What is a real tragedy is that the peoples lives that he was responsible for were not considered by him. I dont think the whole industry should be accountable for one persons bad decision. I know you probably wont print this, but what the heck....Please write me back.

I joined a magazine crew in June of this year. My best friend and I were tired of all our responsibiltys and the crew seemed like an easy way out. We knew a lot of the crew members because they stayed at the hotel we worked at for a month and a half. When we got there we were told all these bizarre rules. We were to be "babysat" for 10 days, we couldn't talk about anything negative, my friend and I weren't even supose to hang out with one another. The first night no one would even tell us what we were going to.

I start November 4,1998,by find a article of "Money,Fun,Travel". I started in Ft.Lauderdale. It was fun. I was paid by commission. I decided to come home for college and they would not give me the money to pay for it. So, I had to spend time at a youth shelter. I lied to the police about my age so I wouldn't be put in a adult shelter. I was in Pensacola Florida and from Oklahoma. Well my mom and dad had to send the money to me and i stayed a night at the shelter then went home on January 6,1999. I though have no regrets the people there were very helpful and positive they helped me with my attitude and health. We worked like 10 hours 6 days a week walking. I do like it but the outcome of coming home was bad so if you go be ready to have enough money for a ticket or a way to get home. They will give you a ride to the bus station then forget you was ever there. So, thank goodness for a loving family.

Hi,
As a mom of an eleven year old and a door to door crew manager I was shocked to see what happens with traveling crews. I run an early evening crew with teens who work locally --no travel involved. At least not out of state. We use a legitamite charity along with one of the top five newspapers in the country. The kids work three hours a night and I give them all a ride home. In addition they are paid well. some take home more than $250 a week for twenty hours work. I also keep in touch with and have friendships with my old proteges. Some are in law school, some married with kids, some still in sales. This can be a positive experience in a childs life. I myself started doors at 14 and worked my way through college, bought my condo and raise my son through newspaper subscription sales. There are alot of legitamite caring people in this business so sorry to hear about the "slave drivers." It taints those of us with integrity.

We were driving ("hopping") from Albuquerque to Colorado Springs. We stopped to sleep at a rest stop. It was fine when we went to sleep, but when we woke up there was an inch or more of snow on the ground. The manager in the car did not know how to drive in the snow. We were doing fine until he began to speed. A truck in front of us fishtailed, and he lost control of the van. We rolled twice and hit the mountain. It was his foolishness that caused this accident, and because of the power structure, he would never admit it or apologize for almost killing us. That's when I decided to leave... but inertia and lack of funds to go home kept me for another year.
Do you regret: Sometimes I regret it, but I feel like it was beneficial to me. People got their magazines...... I think It helped me become a better leader and also to be able to approach situations with some equinamity.

I had a fun time working all over the united states. I sold in almost every state. Never had any problems with money or anything else. If I needed something personal taken care of, my manager was happy to oblige. I have heard of other crews that weren't so reputable. However, I was lucky to have worked for a good one. I have since quit there for other oppertunities. However, I will not forget the life experience I got from working in the bussiness. I have found there are many good companies out there and even met some people from other ones. Some were bad but most were good. It was just a few scum bags that made this all look bad. I got fed normally. I had good hotels. I had alot of fun out there. I even got to be a car handler for a while. I didn't come from much but I learned how to talk to people, and got enough cash to buy myself some nice new clothes and sent money home to my parents. It was a nice feeling to get to do something like that. But all In all I had alot of fun and made some friends. And made a nice living at it for a while. Btw, I knew Jeremy Holmes. He was a nice guy and this is a tragic loss for the families. It was a very stupid thing he tried and there is no excuse for this. But all things considered. It was a safe living/working environment. It was also alot of fun. Esp. for someone who came from nothing.

Comments on page: I like that there is a discussion place for this. However,
it seems like this place is made for the negative side. If not I'm sorry.

Mag crew is not a bad thing! You have to be strong enough in yourself to know that. If you respect yourself and have a positive attitude everything will go your way.

After reading your true stories page, I was disturbed to see how some of these agents had been treated. I then felt obligated to tell my story. I worked with a magazine crew for 7 years and my present husband worked with one for 13 years. My time spent with the magazine crew, although sometimes exhausting, was very fulfilling. I was hired from a newspaper ad in Topeka, KS. At first I would say i had my doubts, but I was never one to quit something without giving it a fair shake. I decided from the beginning though that I would not tell the story that my manager had told me I should say to sell the magazines. Afterall, I was not from the streets and was not doing this job to stay off drugs. I have never been a drug user. So I changed my spill and decided to tell people the truth, I wanted to win a trip. Secretly i told myself that one day I would have my own crew and teach each agent to tell the truth. Well, it must of worked well for me. After my now husband and I went to work for another company i won my first contest and took a cruise to Mexico. What a great time! I placed in every contest I was in and did end of winning another in which I spent to weeks in hawaii. By the age of 21 I had started my own crew. I was never offered false promises, and did my best not to offer false promises to my agents. it is now 4 years later, my husband and I do not travel anymore. As the road is not a great place for our beautiful daughter who is now a year old. We are both still in the sales industry.
Because of the training we had received over the years we have 3 successfull business that we now run. And to tell the truth I am every magazine salesman's dream. I buy from every one of them that gives me an honest spill. there are great companies out there that really do provide direction to young people unfortunately it is the bad ones that everyone always hears about. The only thing I wish i had done differently would be that I didnt get the phone numbers of many friends I met along the way, and most are impossible to track down. I would not take back any of it and miss the road very much. Good luck to those who are not in the same situation that I had the oppurtunity to be a part of.
Do you regret: Never, it was the greatest experience of my life. I met many friends that I wish now I knew how to get in contact with. Unfortunately most i have no idea where they are now.

I too have had a run in with a magazine crew (a too good to be true magazine sales company). In November of 1999 my best friend left me behind to go for the fun and games. Both of us were evicted from our apartment and I went home to my parents...he had nowhere else to turn. Throughout the months he kept in contact with me until just recently. He started telling me of things that they were doing besides magazine sales. Things such as (the obvious) selling in locations without permits, selling services such as hitman type stuff, porn, and drug related sales. He spent almost an entire week in jail because of soliciting without a permit. He also sat by and watched as his co-workers were hauled off to jail for soliciting without permits while he was left on location....when he tried to contact his supervisor/manager the manager's cell-phone was turned off and my best friend was stranded on location until the designated time to be picked up 5 hours later. He also told me of a time that he had to beat somebody up because his supervisors told him to do so...he almost spent time in jail for that also.

Other incidents that I have ran into are things such as "recruiters" coming up to me at night clubs to see if I wanted to earn $3000 a week to travel. I said no but a few of my friends went...including another one of my best friends. She was one of the lucky ones that got out without being hurt. The crew that she had been assigned to had later on that week gotten in a car crash that was fatal to two people (Crystal Mahathy, 18 and Scott Tarwater, 28-whose body had not yet been found).

There are many tragedies that are related to these door-to-door magazine sales crews. Such as, (direct quote from RecordSearchlight, Driver cited Before Crash, Feb.10, 2000) 45 magazine sellers from at least six companies nationwide have been killed since 1992, largely in car crashes....Also other sellers that were contracted with this same company were killed since 1996...a car crash (driver fell asleep at the wheel) and two people beaten to death by other crew members.

Many of the people that are employed by this company are at negative amounts of money...what happened to earning so much a week?
